HOW TO FILL YOUR HOME WITH MEANINGFUL PIECES

As designers we welcome this shift in how we live with open arms and encourage others to do the same. Our clients are realizing that their environments aren’t working for their true needs. They want more purpose in design, more intention and thought – and for that we say HURRAY – that’s what design is all about!

We create environments and design with intention. Your environment is a huge part of your wellbeing and effects your health and your relationships. We take this thought into consideration when we design each space. It’s important to nourish your home with purpose just like you would nourish your body and your mind.

In our conversation with Daniella and Andrew on their podcast Adulting Like A Mother Father we discuss the importance of filling your home with meaningful pieces. We also share our thoughts on where to donate the items you no longer need and suggest where to shop for classic, timeless pieces.

HOW TO FILL YOUR HOME WITH MEANINGFUL PIECES

When we design an environment for our clients we dive deep into their lifestyle.

At the beginning of our design process we ask our clients the nitty gritty questions to get to know them - where are they from, what do they collect and where have they traveled? Ask yourself these same questions when choosing meaningful pieces for your home. Most importantly ask yourself - where do you feel the happiest?

Maybe it’s sitting on a beach in Tulum or maybe it’s at your grandmother’s house sitting on her sofa.

Then go a little deeper in WHY it is your happy place. Try to distinguish what it is about that space that makes you happy. Is it the smells, is it the sounds, is it the colors and materials you’re surrounded by? Maybe it’s the colors of the ocean at the beach or the touch of the velvet fabric on your grandmother’s vintage sofa. What is it about your happiest place that speaks to you? Answering these questions is the first step to filling your space with meaningful pieces and creating an environment that works for your needs.

HOW TO GET RID OF YOUR UNWANTED PIECES

Next, recognize which items no longer bring you joy (yes it’s time to “Marie Kondo” your space) and get rid of items you no longer need or want without being wasteful. We suggest donating locally. When you donate, make sure you’re choosing the best possible resource. Do your research to ensure your recycled items are going to the right place. We work with an amazing company called Solutions for Change.

This is a company our family has worked with for years. Solutions for Change helps solve family homelessness in San Diego. We’ve donated furniture from our clients homes so that they can fill a transitional home for someone that needs it. It’s encouraging to know that your unwanted items are not only going to a family that needs it but also will enjoy it.

WHERE TO SHOP FOR TIMELESS PIECES

One of the biggest things we stress about when purchasing new items and materials is to NOT buy because Pinterest is telling you to buy it, rather buy it because you’re truly drawn to the piece. You will love the piece for years to come not because it’s a trend but because your heart sings every time you use it! We believe these are the pieces that will last. Where do you shop for these pieces? We always encourage collecting items on your travels! Start now and take your time. You’ll often find rad pieces that are one of a kind and unique on your personal experiences. We also LOVE to shop local (from small businesses) and vintage whenever we can. Two of our favorite vintage flea markets in California are the Rose Bowl Flea Market and the Long Beach Flea Market.

Found Rentals in Los Angeles is another great resource to shop locally AND vintage. They have such an amazing collection of vintage pieces that are truly timeless and perfect for any home! The founder, Jeni has curated her collection with these same sentiments in mind. She collects her merchandise from her amazing travels and only buys things that spark joy. Shop her collection here.
